Dude, Where's My Mail?

A parcel goes out on August 31 and finds its way to Kearny, NJ by Sept. 1 just in time for the downpour of rain from Tropical Storm Ida. On September 2, NJ wakes with news that the Kearny, NJ USPS regional distribution center is in shambles after weight from torrential rain collapsed the roof of the post office on top of workers the night prior around approximately 8 PM.

Authorities evacuated nearly 400 people from the large post office building located at 1200 Harrison Avenue. Seven individuals suffered non-fatal injuries according to the National Weather Service after a 30' X 30' portion of the ceiling suddenly collapsed Wednesday night, September 1.

Emergency Services responded to the scene while Tropical Storm Ida swept through the area with torrential rain and powerful winds.

The severity of the injuries is unclear, but there have been no deaths reported.

Residents affected by the roof collapse at Kearny may see a delay in mail, but not necessarily the delay one might expect. Let me clarify.

Since the collapse of the roof, Kearny has switched to a LIFO (Last in first out) policy. This means any mail Kearny received after they were back up and running (around September 6) should see no delay. However, If you have been tracking a package or parcel that arrived at Kearny distribution center on or shortly before the night of the roof collapse at Kearny, then you may not see your mail for a week or more.

With packages coming into Kearny USPS from all over the world and country, some people could be looking at a shipping time that is three weeks or longer.

The one thing we're all asking...Dude, where's my mail?
