Cannabis entrepreneurs can now apply for a retail or medical cannabis license in Morristown, NJ.

Town officials will award two licenses to cannabis businesses in the downtown Morristown, NJ area under new regulations that were approved in December.

Applicants have until April 13, 2022, to submit their proposals to the Town of Morristown.

Ordinances in Morristown allow for two cannabis retailers to operate at a time around the town’s center along Morris and South Streets and in the mixed-use district near Martin Luther King Avenue.

The new ordinances allow for both recreational and medical cannabis dispensaries. The use of cannabis in public spaces will not be allowed.

As stated by Morristown’s cannabis ordinances, dispensaries cannot be located within 200 feet of houses of worship or within 1,000 feet of any school.

Continually, parking must be provided on-site, and no sampling of cannabis products is allowed in the business.

Cannabis retailers will be limited to operating between the hours of 9 am and 8 pm Monday through Saturday, and noon to 8 pm on Sundays.

Morristown’s cannabis advisory board of five members is responsible for reviewing cannabis business applications, but Morristown council members are responsible for granting licenses.

Those looking to open a cannabis dispensary in town must have a state license to operate a dispensary. Applicants awarded a local license will have up to 18 months to secure state approval.

New Jersey law requires applicants for cannabis dispensaries to secure a location and town approval before filing their application with the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

State law also appropriates 2% of all dispensary sales to the town where the dispensary is located.

Morristown voted overwhelmingly in favor of legalizing cannabis, 77% of voters were in favor of recreational cannabis sales. Throughout the state of New Jersey, two-thirds of voters approved the legalization of recreational cannabis.
