Oct ‘22 is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

NDEAM celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

In recognition of the important role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce, the theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) 2022 will be ‘Disability: Part of the Equity Equation.’

Observed annually in October, NDEAM celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. The annual theme is announced early to facilitate advance planning of events.

The following data was collected by the U.S. Census Bureau through the 2021 American Community Survey (ACS).

  • Hearing Difficulties in the U.S. – 4.1M American men at the age of 65 or older experience hearing difficulties. Hearing difficulties among younger Americans is significantly less than the 65+ age group, and yet there is still an alarming amount of young Americans with this difficulty as early as 5 years old. (172K for males and 134K for females).
  • Ambulatory (Walking) Difficulties in the U.S. – 5.1M American females between the ages of 18-64 suffer from ambulatory disabilities which prevent or make it challenging to walk.
  • Cognitive Difficulties in the U.S. – There is almost an equal amount of men and women within the 18-64 age range with a cognitive or learning disability (4.6M and 4.5M respectively).
  • Vision Difficulties in the U.S. – It appears that there are the same amount of men between the age of 18-64 with vision difficulties as there are females in the 65+ age range. This number is both 1.8M.
  • Self-Care Difficulty in the U.S. – According to the U.S Census Bureau, a Self Care Disability/Difficulty is defined as a difficulty, “dressing, bathing, or getting around inside the home because of a physical, mental, or emotional condition lasting 6 months or more.” There are 2.5M American women, 65+, who struggle with self-care under these terms.
  • Independent Living Difficulty in the U.S. – A total of 7.4M Americans between the ages of 18-64 are finding it difficult to live independently in the United States.
