In an Arbor Day Gesture, Columbia Bank Donates an Oak Tree to Enhance Lidgerwood Park
MORRISTOWN, NJ – This year's Arbor Day, a revered national tree-planting holiday observed since 1872, brings a special gift to Morristown from Columbia Bank: the donation of an Oak tree. In a collaborative effort, the Morristown Shade Tree Commission, alongside representatives from Columbia Bank, will plant this significant tree at the Lidgerwood Park playground. The planting ceremony is scheduled for today, Friday, April 12th, at 3:00 PM, aimed at providing much-needed shade to playground visitors and contributing to the local ecosystem's diversity and health.
The Oak tree, renowned for its ecological value in the Northeast, supports hundreds of species, playing a crucial role in maintaining a vibrant native environment. This gesture forms part of a broader initiative by Columbia Bank, enabling local communities to choose a complimentary tree from a selection of shade or flowering varieties, all funded by the bank.
About The Morristown Shade Tree Commission
Established in 2013, the Morristown Shade Tree Commission (STC) is dedicated to the careful management of Morristown’s community forest, focusing on the regulation, planting, and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery on public property. Through its commitment, the STC has successfully secured over $150,000 in grant money for local tree planting initiatives, courtesy of community and corporate partnerships. The commission's innovative tree well remediation efforts in the business district, incorporating BioChar and Flexipave to mitigate soil compaction from pedestrian traffic, have earned it the prestigious Green Communities Award. This upcoming Arbor Day event underscores Morristown's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community well-being.
