Man Sentenced for Kidnapping and Sexual Assault at Fairleigh Dickinson University

Jayshawn E. Moore sentenced under strict terms for 2023 kidnapping and assault at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

FLORHAM PARK, NJ — In a recent court decision, Jayshawn E. Moore, 22, was sentenced to 15 years in New Jersey State Prison for his involvement in a severe criminal incident at Fairleigh Dickinson University last year. The sentencing was delivered by the Honorable Stephen J. Taylor, P.J.Cr., and includes provisions for 85% parole ineligibility under the No Early Release Act.

On April 9, 2023, Moore, who is not a student of the university, committed the offenses of kidnapping and aggravated sexual assault against an adult female victim. The attack, which involved verbal threats, and physical, and sexual assault, occurred within a dormitory on the campus.

Authorities noted that Moore was armed with a knife during the incident. Following his arrest two days later in Elizabeth, he had been detained at the Morris County Correctional Facility until his trial.

In addition to his prison term, Moore is required to register under Megan’s Law and will be under Parole Supervision for Life. He has also been ordered to maintain no contact with the victim.

This case has been marked by significant collaboration among various law enforcement agencies, including the Florham Park Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, which played pivotal roles in both the investigation and Moore's apprehension.

The sentencing reflects the seriousness of the offenses and the commitment of Morris County’s judicial system to ensuring justice for victims of violent crimes. The community has been reminded of the continuing efforts by local authorities to maintain safety and enforce the law rigorously.
