NJDOL Adds 10 New Businesses to the 'Wall of Shame' for Labor Violations

The New Jersey Department of Labor adds ten businesses to its enforcement list for outstanding wage, benefit, and tax law violations, emphasizing the state's commitment to worker rights and fair business practices.

NEW JERSEY - The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has updated its Workplace Accountability in Labor List (commonly known as 'The WALL') by adding ten new businesses found in violation of various state labor laws. This update brings the total to 178 businesses that have accrued liabilities amounting to approximately $18 million in unpaid wages, taxes, and contributions.

These businesses, now publicly listed on The WALL, owe a collective total of $930,511.90 in unpaid contributions, penalties, and interest, specifically impacting the Unemployment Compensation Fund and the State Disability Benefits Fund. Notably, no businesses were removed from the list in the previous month, underscoring the ongoing issues with compliance.

The WALL serves as a crucial enforcement tool, not only holding companies accountable for unpaid dues but also barring them from obtaining public contracts with state, county, or local governments until they settle their liabilities. This initiative, part of a bipartisan action established in 2020, aims to protect ethical businesses from unfair competition by those that circumvent labor laws.

Businesses flagged for potential addition to The WALL receive a notification and are given 20 days to address their liabilities or contest their placement. This system ensures transparency and offers businesses a chance to rectify their violations before public listing.

The NJDOL's efforts, including the monthly updates to The WALL, highlight the state's proactive approach to combating worker misclassification and exploitation, protecting both workers' rights and fair market practices. This list is an essential resource for state, county, municipal, and school procurement officers, ensuring that public contracts are awarded to companies in good standing.

For more information on these updates or to view the list, residents and businesses are encouraged to visit the NJDOL website.
