Governor Murphy Announces NJ TRANSIT Fare Holiday: Free Rides from Aug. 26 - Sept. 2
NJ TRANSIT fares waived across all modes of transportation for one week as a gesture of appreciation to loyal customers.
MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Governor Phil Murphy announced today that NJ TRANSIT will offer a fare holiday from August 26 through September 2, 2024. During this period, customers can ride for free on all NJ TRANSIT buses, trains, and light rail services. This initiative is intended as a "Thank You" to the hundreds of thousands of loyal customers who rely on public transit every day.
For monthly pass holders who have already purchased an August pass, NJ TRANSIT will automatically apply a 25% discount to their September pass. This discount will be available through the NJ TRANSIT mobile app, Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs), and ticket windows.
Governor Murphy emphasized that the fare holiday is not only an expression of gratitude but also an acknowledgment of the recent service challenges faced by NJ TRANSIT customers. The Governor and NJ TRANSIT leadership recognize the disruptions and inconveniences passengers have endured, particularly along the Northeast Corridor (NEC), and are committed to improving the overall transit experience.
“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ TRANSIT riders,” said Governor Murphy. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, especially on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare holiday offers our commuters some relief. We also encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we continue to be thankful to the many New Jerseyans who depend on public transit.”
NJ TRANSIT, in collaboration with Amtrak, has been addressing the infrastructure issues that have contributed to these disruptions. Since a critical meeting on June 27, 2024, between Governor Murphy and the leadership of NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak, significant progress has been made. Increased inspections and repairs of catenary (overhead wire), track signal systems, and substations have resulted in fewer infrastructure-related incidents on the NEC.
Looking ahead, NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak are planning additional long-term improvements, including expanding work windows to accelerate repairs and securing federal grants to enhance infrastructure. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure the NEC, the busiest rail corridor in the country, meets the demands of its passengers.
NJ TRANSIT is also addressing performance issues on the River LINE light rail service, which has faced reliability challenges in recent weeks. As an interim measure, a supplemental bus plan has been implemented to improve service predictability for weekday travelers. At the same time, NJ TRANSIT is working closely with its contracted operator to expedite necessary repairs and upgrades to the light rail vehicles, aiming to restore reliable service as quickly as possible.
