Former NJ Accountant Sentenced to Over One Year for Tax Fraud and Embezzlement

Woodbridge resident Thomas Kohutich to serve prison term, pay restitution for false tax returns and embezzling funds from employer.

TRENTON, N.J. — Thomas Kohutich, 34, of Woodbridge, New Jersey, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for filing false tax returns that concealed embezzled income, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced. Kohutich, a former accountant for a New Jersey manufacturing company, had previously pleaded guilty to falsifying his tax returns for 2018 and 2019, omitting funds he embezzled from his employer and misreporting his income to the IRS.

U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner handed down the sentence in Trenton federal court, also ordering Kohutich to serve one year of supervised release after his prison term. Additionally, Kohutich was directed to pay $234,821 in restitution to the IRS and $829,457 to his former employer, reflecting the full tax loss and stolen funds.

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation, led by Special Agent Jenifer L. Piovesan, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edeli Rivera of the Special Prosecutions Division.
