Drew University Campus Hit by Two Fires, Local Agencies Contain Blazes

The community was praised for its rapid response as investigations into causes continued.

MADISON, NJ — Two separate fire incidents at Drew University have put the effectiveness and rapid response of local and state emergency services into sharp focus. The first incident, a brush fire in the Drew University Forest Preserve, occurred just before 10 a.m. on October 26, while the second, a structure fire at the university’s tennis courts, broke out just before midnight on October 27.

Forest Preserve Fire Contained Quickly

Early detection of the brush fire from the Greystone Lookout Tower in Denville allowed the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to act swiftly, with aid from the Madison Fire and Police Departments. Additional support was dispatched from the Morris Township Fire Department among others, enabling crews to confine the blaze to an acre and a half of the forest preserve. By early afternoon, the fire was declared under control, with teams remaining on-site to address residual hot spots and ensure no further spread.

Mayor Robert H. Conley commended the collaborative efforts saying, "I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the first responders from Madison and the mutual aid agencies who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and protect the Drew Forest Preserve. Your dedication exemplifies the strength of our community and the vital role of our emergency services in keeping our residents and natural resources safe."

The fire was successfully prevented from reaching the tree canopy, preserving the ecological integrity of the area. By 3:30 p.m., all teams had cleared the scene, leaving the forest mostly unscathed thanks to their efforts.

Late Night Blaze at Tennis Courts

The second fire erupted at the university’s tennis court structure late (approximately 11:45 pm) on October 27, prompting immediate responses from the Madison Fire Department and EMS, with the site being a short distance from the earlier forest fire scene. The rapid deployment of first responders and the transmission of a second alarm helped prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent Drew Forest Preserve or other university facilities.

Mayor Conley praised the first responders again for their effectiveness in a statement: “The swift action and teamwork displayed by our local fire departments, police, and state fire services were outstanding. Their commitment to protecting our community and preserving the Drew Forest is deeply appreciated. We are incredibly fortunate that their expertise prevented the fire from spreading further.”

Investigations and Community Impact

Both fires are currently under investigation to determine their causes, with the Morris County Prosecutor's Office, Madison Fire Department, and Madison Police Department leading the efforts. The quick containment of both incidents has been a relief to the community, highlighting the preparedness and resilience of local emergency services.
