Mendham Township Girl Scout Troop Builds New Bridge to Enhance Patriot's Path
MENDHAM TWP, NJ - Girl Scout Troop 97847 of Mendham Township, composed of three dedicated eighth graders from Mendham Township Middle School, recently completed their Silver Award project, “Bridge for the Better.” The project, designed to improve access and promote outdoor activities, entailed constructing a new bridge on Patriot’s Path behind Mendham Township Elementary School, reconnecting a trail that had been inaccessible due to the collapse of a previous bridge. This addition now enables students, hikers, bikers, and community members to safely cross the river without navigating through water.
The Scouts chose this project after identifying the need for a sustainable crossing and the potential impact on the community. The original bridge, which allowed access across the river, had deteriorated and fallen years ago, making that part of Patriot’s Path difficult to traverse. With a focus on promoting outdoor engagement and making nature accessible, Troop 97847 embraced the challenge of creating a new, sturdy bridge as part of their Silver Award, which is one of the highest honors at the Cadette level in Girl Scouts.
The girls spent two years preparing for the project, completing necessary Cadette “Outdoor Journey” badges, and conducting extensive research into bridge building, river erosion, and environmental preservation. They presented their plans at township committee meetings, worked closely with Mendham’s Department of Public Works (DPW), and sought guidance from the environmental committee, with Environmental Committee member John Mallon and DPW’s Dave Reid providing critical support in planning, budgeting, and constructing the bridge. The team also learned hands-on skills such as laying planks, applying wood sealant, and using tools safely during the project’s construction phase.
To fund the project, the Scouts raised money through cookie sales, personal donations, and received support from community businesses. Mendham Plywood provided discounted supplies, Ace Hardware in Chester donated wood sealant, and the Mendham Township DPW contributed base materials, ensuring the bridge’s long-term durability. Each Scout also personally contributed $130 toward remaining material costs.
On August 27, 2024, the Scouts officially completed the bridge, transforming the path and allowing the community to once again enjoy the uninterrupted trail. The Girl Scouts expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the project, including the Mendham Township Committee, local businesses, and all who purchased Girl Scout cookies.
Reflecting on the impact of their project, the Scouts shared, “As Girl Scouts, we strive to make the world and the community a better place... We hope to set an example for others to work together to create positive changes in their community, and for younger generations of Girl Scouts to realize they are capable of changing the world around them, regardless of their age.”
Community members are encouraged to visit the newly completed bridge on Patriot’s Path and enjoy the scenic outdoor spaces Mendham has to offer.
