MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP, NJ - On February 18, 2025, an article was published on TAPinto Montville titled "Chemicals found in Montville Water will Cost $20-$30 Million to Remove and Monitor" that made the incorrect and misleading claim that certain chemicals known as PFAS were found in Montville Township's water supply, and that the removal of and monitoring for these chemicals, PFAS, will cost $20-$30 million. This claim was misleading and inaccurate. The Township of Montville is in full compliance with all state and federal regulations.
PFAS, or "Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances," are often referred to as "forever chemicals." These are chemicals that resist grease, oil, water, and heat and do not break down easily in the environment or in human bodies. Certain PFAS are authorized by the FDA for limited use in products like cookware, food packaging, and food processing equipment.
The FDA reports the following concerning PFAS, "The widespread use of PFAS and their persistence in the environment means that PFAS from past and current uses have resulted in increasing levels of contamination of the air, water, and soil. Accumulation of certain PFAS has also been shown through blood tests to occur in humans and animals. While the science surrounding potential health effects of bioaccumulation is developing, exposure to some types of PFAS have been associated with serious health effects."
Once more, these chemicals are manmade and have been in use in consumer products since the 1940, and are now in products including stain- and water-resistant fabrics and carpeting, cleaning products, paints, and fire-fighting foams.
The Township of Montville wants to ensure residents that the Township's water system has been "absolutely complaint with such stringent regulations regarding PFAS." Montville Township is "proactively investing in its water system in order to continue to meet said regulations going forward."
Once more, the article published on TAPinto Montville, including subsequent social media activity, was inaccurate and misleading. While some water providers throughout the State of New Jersey are currently struggling, and occasionally failing, to comply with federal and state regulations, the Township of Montville is not in this category. Montville Township's water is tested on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis and "at no time has the township's water supply been in violation of the State and Federal drinking water regulations as they related to PFAS."
