School Funding Increases in NJ State Budget

On March 25, 2022, Governor Phil Murphy, Senator John Bramnick, Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, and Acting Education Commissioner Angelica Allen-McMillan visited Chatham High School to highlight one of the school districts in the state that will benefit from the nearly $10 billion in funding for New Jersey schools in the states Fiscal Year 2023 budget plan.

“My administration is committed to strengthening our school system and providing every New Jersey child access to the quality education they deserve,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “Under my proposal, school districts like Chatham will be able to provide a world-class education to their students without passing additional costs along to local taxpayers.”

The budget proposal includes an additional $650 million in K-12 school aid, including a 14.12% ($531,187) funding increase for the School District of the Chatham’s – located in Morris County.

“This increased funding is going to benefit every teacher, administrator, parent and child who endured two years of unprecedented disruptions and challenges. I applaud them for their commitment and endurance, and I am excited to celebrate this news,” said Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz. “From property taxpayers to the children who need that extra academic support, this school funding for Legislative District 21 is a win for everyone.”

In the FY2023 budget, every school district within the 21st Legislative District will similarly see an increase in state aid, with a total of more than $66.5 million in funding.

Some School Districts in Morris, Somerset, and Union Counties will receive anywhere from a 5.98% to 21.03% increase in aid from FY2022 to FY2023. 

All districts included in the increased funding will also receive Special Education Aid in amounts up to ~$5.6 million, as well as Transportation Aid in amounts up to ~$1.3 million.

Two Morris County School Districts receiving bump:

• The School District of The Chathams - receiving a 14.12% increase in aid from FY2022 to FY2023, and
• Long Hill Township – receiving a 17.33% increase in aid from FY2022 to FY2023.

Morris County will receive a 9.84% increase in K-12 School Aid, from a year ago, and approximately $16.7 million in Preschool Aid for FY2023.
