Mahwah Train Station Set for Major Revitalization as NJ Transit Advances Improvement Plans

Mahwah Township, Bergen County, NJ - NJ TRANSIT announced on March 23, 2023, that it is moving forward with the revitalization of Mahwah train station in an effort to enhance the customer experience and preserve the historic charm of the building. Phase One of the project will involve a critical state of good repair work on the station's roof, retaining wall replacements, and electrical and lighting upgrades.

The improvements are part of NJ TRANSIT's ongoing commitment to maintaining safe and reliable service for New Jersey residents. New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair, Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, emphasized the importance of capital investment in the project, stating that it would benefit both the local community and NJ TRANSIT customers.

NJ TRANSIT President & CEO, Kevin S. Corbett, also highlighted the importance of the station improvements, noting that train stations are often the first touchpoint in a customer's journey. The upgrades are aimed at ensuring that these vital transit hubs deliver the best possible experience for customers and the communities they serve.

Mahwah Mayor Jim Wysocki expressed relief and gratitude for the planned improvements, acknowledging the Mahwah train station's importance as a central piece of the town's heritage. Mayor Wysocki looks forward to the restoration of the station, which will return it to its full, intended use for residents and commuters.

NJ TRANSIT has released an Invitation For Bids as part of the procurement process for the project. Phase One will include roof repairs, such as new framing, gutters, downspouts, and roof sheathing replacement. Retaining wall and site work will involve the replacement of retaining walls, including north stairs, concrete work, and associated landscaping. Additionally, electrical work will include the relocation of the Ticket Vending Machine and upgrades to the electrical equipment and lighting below the roof ceiling over the arcade columns.

The Mahwah train station revitalization project will not only improve the travel experience for commuters and visitors but also enhance the beauty and safety of a beloved and historical piece of Mahwah Township's downtown.
