Registration Opens for First Courses at Newly Created UITP’s North American Regional Training Center

NEWARK, NJ – North America is set to host its first-ever courses at the International Association of Public Transport’s (UITP) new Regional Training Center, in partnership with NJ TRANSIT and Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). Registration is now open for these innovative public transportation training courses, scheduled to begin on July 10.

The training center, located at Rutgers CAIT in Piscataway, NJ, is UITP's first such establishment in North America. Set to welcome public transportation professionals from across the continent and beyond, the center will offer courses on a range of topics, including electric buses, fare management, rail operations, and public transportation fundamentals. These courses will run in July, September, October, and November of this year.

The partnership between UITP, NJ TRANSIT, and Rutgers CAIT was announced earlier in March, marking a significant milestone in the development of public transportation education in North America.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair, expressed her excitement about the project, stating, "The training sessions will bring together some of the leading worldwide voices across all facets of our industry. NJ TRANSIT is proud to be a partner in this landmark program."

NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett also celebrated the center's inauguration, heralding the start of a "new era in public transit training" in the United States.

The four inaugural courses scheduled for 2023 include Public Transport Fundamentals, Electric Buses: Fleet & Infrastructure Planning, Operations and Maintenance, Rail Operations and Maintenance, and Ticketing and Fare Management. Interested parties can access all program information and registration on the UITP website.

"Rutgers CAIT is excited to welcome the inaugural cohort of transit professionals to campus this summer as part of the UITP North American Regional Training Center," said CAIT Director Dr. Ali Maher. He stressed the importance of education in building a sustainable transportation system and developing a skilled workforce to meet the climate, economic, and equity challenges of the 21st century.

UITP is a global network dedicated to sustainable transportation, aiming to improve the quality of life in cities worldwide. The organization already has Regional Training Centers in Europe, Asia-Pacific and Eurasia, South America, South Africa, and now, North America. These centers provide top-notch transportation training, establishing uniform standards and best practices in all areas of sustainable transportation.

The Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) at Rutgers will be a key partner in this initiative, assisting with logistics, administrative support, marketing, and hosting the training sessions.

This groundbreaking initiative underlines the commitment of NJ TRANSIT, UITP, and Rutgers CAIT to drive innovation in public transportation and build a more sustainable and inclusive future. For more information, visit njtransit.com/uitp.
