NJ TRANSIT Advances Secaucus to Meadowlands Transitway Project

Phase 2 begins final engineering on plan to increase peak capacity utilizing existing infrastructure.

NJ TRANSIT is making strides towards implementing environmentally friendly transit access between its Secaucus Junction Station and the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex. The Secaucus to Meadowlands Transitway project plans to make use of mostly existing infrastructure and roadways to provide additional capacity.

NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said, “NJ TRANSIT is taking another exciting step towards advancing an innovative and environmentally friendly solution to move additional customers between Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands Complex.”

The project includes the construction of a new ground-level terminal at the Meadowlands and modifications to the existing bus circulation configuration and terminal at Secaucus Junction. The goal is to seamlessly and continuously transport a stadium’s worth of people between Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex, which is anchored by MetLife Stadium and situated seven miles away.

In August 2021, the NJ TRANSIT board authorized staff to enter into a contract with HNTB Corporation for the project's conceptual development, preliminary engineering, final design engineering, and construction assistance. At that time, funding was authorized to complete Phase 1 in an amount not exceeding $3,542,944.75.

The board has now authorized HNTB Corporation to enter Phase 2, at a cost not exceeding $34,952,784.55 million plus five percent for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds.

This crucial infrastructure investment aims to increase service capacity between the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex and Secaucus Junction Station. It will bolster the public transportation system, attracting and sustaining some of the world's largest entertainment and sporting events, and promoting economic prosperity in the region and throughout all of New Jersey.

As part of the project, transit modes will be configured to be compatible with zero-emission vehicles or to be transitioned easily to zero-emission vehicles in the future. The project will also be scalable to fully autonomous vehicle operation as demonstrated advances in the industry allow.
