New Jersey Supreme Court Unveils 2023 Initiatives to Strengthen Equal Justice
The fourth installment of the Court's Action Plan aims to remove systemic barriers and improve court experiences for marginalized groups.
The New Jersey Supreme Court has released its 2023 Action Plan for Ensuring Equal Justice, introducing nine key initiatives to enhance fairness and remove systemic barriers for people of color and other marginalized groups in the state.
The Court’s commitment to justice and equity has been evident since the inception of its first Action Plan in 2020. According to the recent announcement, the New Jersey Supreme Court has overseen changes in 27 different areas, some of which have directly benefited those engaged with the legal system, while others have laid the groundwork for broader systemic transformation.
Chief Justice Stuart Rabner stated, “Through the Action Plan, the New Jersey Supreme Court reaffirms its commitment to advance specific, measurable objectives that support the cause of justice and equity for all who come in contact with the courts.”
Key Initiatives
Among the nine initiatives revealed for 2023, the Court is focusing on the following areas:
- Financial Burdens: The Court plans to revamp the way court-imposed fines and fees are structured, with the aim of preventing undue financial hardship for individuals with limited resources.
- Language Services: Leveraging technology, the Court will work to enhance access to court language services, ensuring that interpreting services and translation support are readily available from the onset of court proceedings.
- Family Support: The Court will provide improved resources and information to family members of individuals with mental health issues and developmental disabilities, enabling them to more effectively navigate the legal system.
- Elder Protection: New protections for at-risk older adults in New Jersey are being considered, in line with recommendations from the Judiciary Elder Justice Working Group.
