Major Weekend Closure of Pulaski Skyway: Alternate Routes Advised
NJDOT Announces Two-Day Closure for Essential Maintenance; Motorists Rerouted via NJ Turnpike Extension
NJDOT has confirmed the full closure of the Pulaski Skyway, a key artery connecting Jersey City and Newark, to facilitate rocker-bent work on the historic 91-year-old bridge. This proactive measure is part of the ongoing rehabilitation efforts to maintain the structural integrity of the bridge.
Closure Details:
- The closure will commence at 9 p.m. tonight, December 8, and is scheduled to last until 9 p.m. on December 9.
- Skanska Koch, the appointed contractor, will be working to re-jack the Skyway at span 51 near Broadway Avenue in Jersey City, aiming to reset the bridge on new rocker bearings.
Detours and Traffic Rerouting:
- Northbound Detour: Traffic on Route 1&9 Express Lanes will be redirected onto the Local Lanes, following Route 1&9 Truck northbound to Jersey City.
- Southbound Detour: Traffic on Route 139 lower roadway will be guided to take off-ramp to I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound.
- Local Traffic for Jersey City: Route 139 Upper Roadway remains accessible for local destinations.
Motorist Guidance:
- NJDOT encourages using the NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension as the primary alternative, especially for those heading to the Holland Tunnel, I-78, or I-280/Route 7.
- Detailed detour routes are provided for both northbound and southbound traffic, with specific instructions for accessing local Jersey City areas.
Project Coordination and Contact Information:
- This closure is a critical phase of Contract 8B of the Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project.
- NJDOT ensures careful coordination with other regional transportation projects to mitigate traffic impact.
- A dedicated project hotline (973-776-7400) and email (Pulaski.Skyway@dot.nj.gov) are available for public inquiries and suggestions.
NJDOT advises motorists to plan their routes accordingly and thanks the public for their patience and cooperation during this essential maintenance period.
