$7 Million NJDOC Grant Boosts Reentry Services for Formerly Incarcerated

New Jersey Department of Corrections Expands Community-Based Support with NJLEAD Program

New Jersey – The New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC), in a major step towards aiding the reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals, has announced a $7 million grant initiative. This funding, available through the NJLEAD reentry grant program, is aimed at enhancing the support systems for individuals transitioning from prison back into society.

Through the Division of Programs and Reintegration Services, NJDOC is focusing these grants on local nonprofits and community organizations. The NJLEAD (Locally Empowered, Accountable, and Determined) program emphasizes evidence-informed strategies to create a seamless continuum of care, bridging the gap between prison and community life. This initiative is part of the Fiscal Year 2024 Appropriations Act.

Commissioner Victoria L. Kuhn, Esq. of NJDOC, highlighted the positive impact of reentry services, stating, “We have seen the tangible effects reentry services have on successful reintegration and are proud of the reentry collaboration between the NJDOC team and our NJLEAD partners, as we work together to transform lives.”

NJLEAD grants focus on critical areas such as mental and physical health services, housing, employment, and entrepreneurship. The program aims to provide those exiting incarceration with the necessary tools for successful reintegration. This includes additional grants to establish municipal liaisons for interagency collaboration and guided discharge processes.

Dr. Darcella Patterson Sessomes, NJDOC Chief of Programs and Reintegration Services, emphasized the holistic approach of the NJLEAD partners, covering all aspects of reentry care from housing and employment to entrepreneurship development.

The funding is divided into four categories:

  1. Reintegration Service Coordination in Urban Communities: Focuses on municipal reintegration service coordination.
  2. Reentry Supportive Services in Urban Communities: Aims at comprehensive post-release case management and wraparound supportive services.
  3. Innovative Reentry Career and Entrepreneurial Initiatives: Supports entrepreneurial development for economic stability and independence.
  4. Innovative Supplemental Prerelease Reentry Preparation Services and Vocational Training and Certification: Focuses on pre-release rehabilitative services and vocational training.

Interested organizations have until January 17, 2024, to submit their applications. Details of the grant opportunities are available on the NJDOC website.

This grant represents a significant investment in the future of individuals reentering society, ensuring they receive the support and opportunities necessary to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to their communities.
