Morris County Seniors Learn Scam Defense Tactics at Prosecutor's Seminar

The event, part of the CAREs program, highlighted ways for the elderly to identify and report scams, enhancing their financial security.

Morristown, NJ – To combat the rising tide of scams targeting the elderly, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO) conducted an educational seminar on December 13, 2023, at the Morris Township Municipal Building. The session, led by Assistant Prosecutor Christine Lopez and Detective Ryan Thomas, was part of the MCPO’s CAREs (Crimes Against Retired & Elderly) initiative.

A key focus of the seminar was empowering seniors with the knowledge to safeguard their finances against scammers. Det. Thomas emphasized the importance of prompt reporting of scam incidents, as it increases the chances of recovering losses and aids in law enforcement investigations.

Assistant Prosecutor Lopez addressed the social stigma often faced by elderly scam victims, noting that many fear losing their financial independence or feel embarrassed about being deceived. The seminar also tackled the identification of fraudulent communications, including phone calls, text messages, and emails, and discussed the role of AI and social media in modern scamming tactics.

The presentation covered various scamming techniques, such as fake distress calls from supposed grandchildren, virus alerts on computers, and deceptive investment offers. Scammers often exploit emotions, using tactics like fake bank alerts, fraudulent package tracking links, and romance scams.

To bolster their defenses, residents were advised to regularly check financial statements, adjust social media privacy settings, verify emergency calls supposedly from grandchildren, establish safe words against AI voice scams, and authenticate calls claiming to be from law enforcement.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, offering attendees direct access to the experts. This event is one of several held this year in Morris County, as part of the MCPO's ongoing effort to protect seniors from financial exploitation.

Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll condemned the criminal targeting of seniors, stating, "It is despicable that criminals would prey on our vulnerable seniors. The MCPO aims to fight this multi-billion dollar scourge by enabling seniors to successfully identify would-be scammers, along with vigorous investigation and prosecution whenever possible.”
