Prominent U.S. Attorney's Office Figure Departs for Private Sector After 14 Years of Service

Lee M. Cortes Jr., a Key Figure in New Jersey's Legal Landscape, Leaves a Legacy of Justice and Excellence.

In an announcement that marks the end of an era for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of New Jersey, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney Lee M. Cortes Jr. is set to leave his position for the private sector, following a distinguished 14-year tenure. Appointed by U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, Cortes's career has been highlighted by his pivotal role in numerous significant legal initiatives and his unwavering dedication to upholding justice.

Joining the office in 2010, Cortes initially took charge of the Health Care Fraud Unit and later ascended to the role of Deputy Chief of the Special Prosecutions Division before he was appointed Executive U.S. Attorney. His responsibilities have spanned from frontline litigation in federal criminal trials to overseeing critical investigations that concluded in significant guilty pleas.

"Lee Cortes is one of the finest attorneys to have worked at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He has worked on and supervised some of our most complex and important matters and has always conducted himself in the highest traditions of the office," lauded U.S. Attorney Sellinger. 

In his role, Cortes oversaw a team of over 300 staff members, driving efforts to secure the safety and justice for the residents of New Jersey. His tenure is noted for setting a benchmark of excellence for all Assistant U.S. Attorneys in the district.

Cortes's tenure as chief of the Health Care Fraud Unit saw him leading a team of prosecutors in tackling major healthcare-related offenses. His oversight led to significant prosecutions of corporations, executives, and healthcare professionals under various statutes, including the Anti-Kickback Statute and the False Claims Act, showcasing his commitment to combating healthcare fraud and ensuring ethical medical practices.

In his capacity as deputy chief of the Special Prosecutions Division, Cortes was instrumental in supervising public corruption cases and upholding civil rights, further cementing his reputation as a dedicated and fair prosecutor.
