Chatham Township Secures $375,000 Grant for Pedestrian Safety and ADA Improvement Project
Chatham Township, NJ - The Chatham Township Committee has announced the successful receipt of a $375,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation's Local Aid Infrastructure Fund. The grant will be utilized to finance the Township's Pedestrian Safety and ADA Improvement Project, which aims to upgrade existing crosswalks and enhance pedestrian safety within Chatham Township.
The funding will allow the Township to continue working on the remaining crosswalks that have not been funded as part of an ongoing project. Thirteen crosswalks on Fairmount Avenue, stretching from Runnymede Road to Nicholson Drive, are slated for upgrades. Additionally, two crosswalk improvements are planned for the intersection of Mountainview Road and Meyersville Road, while two more upgrades are proposed for crossings on River Road at the intersections of Henry Drive and Mountainside Drive.
Fairmount Avenue, Meyersville Road, and River Road are primary thoroughfares within Chatham Township and experience regular vehicular traffic. The project's main objectives include upgrading crosswalk curb ramps to meet ADA standards, installing detectable warning surfaces, adding associated turning space, restriping crosswalks, putting in new concrete curbs, and restoring surrounding road, sidewalk, and lawn areas.
Chatham Township Mayor Ashley Felice expressed enthusiasm for the grant, stating, "Safety and accessibility remain top priorities for Chatham Township. This Project demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring that our streets and sidewalks are safe and accessible for everyone. We are targeting completion of this project before Chatham Schools re-open in September. I commend our staff on their efforts to seek out grant funds to offset the rising costs of infrastructure improvements and minimize the burden on taxpayers."
