South Woods State Prison Water Main Break Causes Temporary Shut-Off
South Woods State Prison near its powerhouse had a water main break reported on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, which had temporarily shut off the water supply for the facility. On Thursday, January 19, the facility's water supply was cut off for emergency repairs, but the heat supply was not affected. Incarcerated persons and staff were provided with bottled water for drinking and hygiene, and portable toilets were brought in.
The water supply was restored on Friday, January 20, and by 4 pm, the system was back online, with toilets and showers available for use. All incarcerated persons were supplied with bottled water for drinking, and additional water testing was conducted by an independent contractor to ensure the safety and quality of the water.
On Monday, January 23, 2023, the facility was returned to normal operations, and all restrictions were lifted. Incarcerated persons and staff had access to adequate drinking water at all times during the incident. The water supply has been functioning without any interruptions since repairs were made and water quality was confirmed.
This incident showcases the quick response and proactive measures taken by NJDOC personnel to ensure the safety and well-being of incarcerated persons and staff. The additional level of water testing adds an extra layer of precaution and gives the assurance of safe and quality drinking water for all.
