NJ TRANSIT has announced the launch of a new payment option that allows customers to use cash to load value onto the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App. The "Cash in App" feature aims to bring convenience and flexibility to customers who prefer to use cash or do not have a debit or credit card.
By utilizing over 1,000 participating network retailers in New Jersey such as 7-Eleven, Walgreens, CVS, and Family Dollar, customers can convert cash directly to digital balances in the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, which can then be used to purchase electronic NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes. This new payment option also aims to reduce the handling of cash on board buses and trains.
“This Cash in App payment expansion allows for more customers, including those without bank accounts or credit cards, to use the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App and help reduce the handling of cash on board buses and trains,” said New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti. “NJ TRANSIT remains committed to maximizing access to convenient public transportation for all New Jerseyans.”
Customers who load cash into their My Transit Wallets through participating retailers will also receive a $5 credit towards NJ TRANSIT tickets and passes within 30 days.
The NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, which has been downloaded more than 8.6 million times since its launch in 2013, aims to modernize fare payment by adding another option for customers to purchase tickets and passes. With nearly 140 million tickets sold, the app promises to further reduce cash and paper-based tickets, and take advantage of a statewide retail network to expand access to transit, particularly for the unbanked.
To use the Cash in App feature, customers can add cash to their MyTransit Wallet by visiting participating retailers or finding the nearest one through the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App's MyTransit Wallet screen with location services enabled. Store clerks at participating retailers will scan the barcode on the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App to convert cash into a digital balance.
NJ TRANSIT's new Cash in App feature is now available for use.
