Weekend Traffic Alert: Multiple Construction and Maintenance Projects Affect Traffic Around Morristown, NJ

Several construction and maintenance projects throughout New Jersey are causing traffic disruptions, and Morristown residents should take note of the following road closures and detours.

Route 18 lane closures required in both directions tonight as paving project advances in East Brunswick, Middlesex County

Closures necessary for underground utility relocation

Starting tonight, March 17, at 8 p.m., the left and center lanes on both sides of Route 18, between West Ferris Street and Edgeboro Road/the Old Bridge Turnpike Interchange in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, will be closed until 7 a.m. on March 18.

The center lane will reopen by Saturday morning, but the left lane will remain closed. The speed limit will also be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph.

The closure is necessary for underground utility relocation and will last until fall 2023. Motorists should expect delays or plan alternate routes.

At least one lane of traffic will be open for overnight travel, and local businesses will remain accessible during business hours. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays or plan an alternate route.

This work is part of the $86.1 million federally-funded Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation project that will make repairs on approximately four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County.

Work includes milling and paving, improvements to the drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps, and upgrading guiderail. Improvements will also be made to various intersections throughout the project limits. The project is expected to be completed in fall 2026.

Route 3 ramps to Route 495 eastbound to be closed tonight and tomorrow night in North Bergen Township

Route 495 eastbound right lane closure also required overnight

Also starting tonight, the ramps from Route 3 eastbound and westbound to Route 495 eastbound in North Bergen Township, Hudson County, will be closed until 12 p.m. on March 18 and again from 9 p.m. on March 18 until 12 p.m. on March 19 for concrete deck repairs to the Route 495 Bridge over Route 3.

The right lane on Route 495 eastbound will also be closed from 10 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. on March 18 and from 9 p.m. on March 18 until 11 a.m. on March 19. NJ Transit Bus Route 320 will be detoured at the North Bergen Park and Ride Lot underneath Route 495.

The closure is the first of three weekends of lane and ramp closures for bridge deck repairs as part of a $22.6 million state-funded maintenance project. At least one lane of traffic will be open during construction, and motorists should expect delays or plan alternate routes.

Route 1&9 northbound ramp to Port Street and Port Newark to be closed and detoured tonight in Newark

Overnight lane closures on Port Street ramp to I-78 and 1&9 southbound

Starting tonight at 11 p.m. until tomorrow at 7 a.m., the ramp from Route 1&9 northbound to Port Street and Port Newark will be closed for an overhead sign installation project in Newark, Essex County.

A detour will be in place and motorists will be directed to follow the posted signage. The ramp will reopen by Saturday morning with traffic shifted to the right.

Additionally, the left lane on the ramp from Port Street westbound to I-78 and Route 1&9 southbound will be closed from 8 p.m. tonight until 7 a.m. tomorrow for the installation of a median work zone. This traffic pattern will be in effect for about three months.

The work is part of a $9.3 million state-funded project to replace sign structures on various routes in Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Mercer, Camden, Ocean, Union, and Essex counties, and is expected to be completed in fall 2023.

Route 3 westbound ramp to Route 21 northbound to be closed and detoured tonight in Clifton, Passaic County

Closure required to reopen shoulder on Route 3 ramp

The Route 3 westbound ramp to Route 21 northbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured from 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 17 until 5 a.m. Saturday, March 18 in Clifton, Passaic County. The closure is required to reopen the shoulder on the Route 3 ramp which has been closed for bridge repairs since June 2022.

The work is part of a $9.7 million state-funded maintenance project to repair steel and aluminum structures at various locations in eight counties throughout North Jersey.

Route 22 eastbound ramp from Mountain Avenue closed Saturday as Route 22 Bridge over Echo Lake project advances in Mountainside

Route 22 right lane closures also required on Saturday in both directions

The ramp from Mountain Avenue to Route 22 eastbound will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, due to the Route 22 Bridge over Echo Lake Project progressing in Mountainside, Union County.

The right lane on Route 22 eastbound will also be closed from New Providence Road/CR 645 to Locust Avenue, and the right lane on Route 22 westbound will be closed between Summit Road/CR 643 and Mountain Avenue/CR 613, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the same day for utility work.

This is the fourth of five weekends of closures for utility work, and at least one lane of traffic will be maintained on Route 22 in both directions. Motorists should drive slowly, be cautious, expect delays, or plan an alternate route. NJDOT will provide notice before any future closures.

The $9 million federally-funded project aims to replace the culvert under the Route 22 Bridge over Echo Lake, with the project being completed in stages to maintain all travel lanes until the fall of 2024.
