Florham Park Water Department annual hydrant flushing beginning Tuesday, April 11

The Florham Park Water Department will be conducting its annual hydrant flushing program beginning Tuesday, April 11, 2023, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. The program will take approximately two weeks to complete. This is part of the Borough’s continuous efforts to improve water quality for their customers.

It also serves the following purposes:
 It flushes sediments from mainline pipes.
 It verifies the proper operation of the fire hydrants.

What should I do when the Borough crews are flushing in my area?
If you see a Borough crew flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or the dishwasher until the flushing has been completed. If you see hydrant flushing crews working in the area, please drive carefully and treat them like any other road construction crew.

What should I do after hydrant flushing?
 If tap water is used during flushing, it could come out full of sediment or brown and may cause discoloration. If you encounter discolored water, shut the water off and wait several minutes. After waiting, check the clarity by running COLD water for a few minutes which will allow new water to work its way into your pipes. If the water is clear, it is okay to use. If not, wait a few more minutes and check again. In some cases, there may be slight discoloration for a few hours. The discoloration only affects the appearance of the water, but it does not affect the water quality.
 Avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing times. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap; then, wash a load of dark clothes first.
 If pressure or volume seems low, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
Residents can expect some discoloration of the water for a short period of time (a few hours) after flushing. It is not harmful to your health, and this condition can be remedied by allowing the water to run until clear.
