Adopt a Shelter Pet Day Helps Furry Friends Find Forever Homes in New Jersey
On April 30, animal shelters across New Jersey are opening their doors for National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, an initiative organized by the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH). In an effort to help pets find their forever homes, participating shelters will be waiving adoption fees during special events held throughout the state.
"New Jersey Adopt a Shelter Pet Day serves as a heartwarming reminder that numerous loving animals of all ages await their forever families at local shelters and pounds," said Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. "Pet ownership comes with many health benefits, including regular exercise and companionship."
This statewide initiative aims to ease overcrowding in shelters and provide loving homes for animals in need. Many New Jersey shelters are currently operating at or above capacity, which not only limits space for additional animals but also increases the burden on shelter staff and resources.
"Animal shelters across New Jersey deliver critical public health services for both animals and people every day by caring for stray and surrendered animals," said Darby McDermott, DVM, MPH, the NJ State Public Health Veterinarian at NJDOH. "With a variety of dogs and cats of all sizes and ages in our state's shelters, there's a perfect match for every family. We encourage residents to contact their local shelters to find their new furry friend or explore volunteering and fostering opportunities."
National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day raises awareness for the millions of pets in shelters nationwide. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) estimates that 6.3 million animals enter shelters each year, with around 4.1 million being adopted annually.
The bond between people and pets offers numerous health benefits, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including improved heart health, reduced stress, loneliness, and anxiety, and increased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities.
