New Jersey American Water Announces $3.8 Million Investment in Berkeley Heights Infrastructure
Berkeley Heights to Receive Infrastructure Upgrades with $3.8 Million Investment for Improved Water Service Reliability and Flow
New Jersey American Water will replace approximately 7,100 feet of aging water main in Berkeley Heights starting this week
Berkeley Heights, N.J. – APRIL 18, 2023 – New Jersey American Water has announced plans to invest $3.8 million in the replacement of approximately 7,100 feet of aging water main in Berkeley Heights, beginning this week. The project aims to enhance water service reliability and increase water flows for both household consumption and fire protection in the community.
The existing 6- and 8-inch water lines, some of which date back to the 1920s, will be replaced with new 12-inch ductile iron mains along Park Avenue, from Plainfield Avenue to Mountain Avenue. In addition to the main replacement, seven fire hydrants and 79 utility-owned service lines along the pipeline route will also be upgraded. As part of a statewide initiative to remove all lead and galvanized service lines by 2031, New Jersey American Water will replace any customer-owned service lines identified as lead or galvanized.
This investment is a part of the company's multimillion-dollar initiative to accelerate the renewal of water infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life in over 100 communities across the state.
CRJ Contracting, Inc., a local and qualified contractor, commenced work this week and anticipates completion within approximately five months, weather permitting. Work hours will generally be from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with night work at the intersections of Mountain Avenue and Plainfield Avenue, and a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule near the school and train station. Work outside these hours is not expected unless required to maintain the project schedule. Final street restorations are set to be completed in the fall of 2023.
Project timelines are subject to change due to various factors, including weather and supply availability. Customers are encouraged to sign up for alerts through their MyWater account and follow New Jersey American Water on social media for project updates.
For the safety of the public and workers, traffic restrictions and/or alternating traffic patterns may be implemented during work hours. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will be granted access during construction. The company urges drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution around work sites.
