I-287 Northbound Ramp to I-78 Eastbound Closed This Weekend for Bridge Replacement Project

Somerset County, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced the temporary closure of the I-287 northbound ramp to I-78 eastbound in Somerset County starting tomorrow, May 5, at 9 a.m. The closure is part of the ongoing Bridges over Route 202/206 and Washington Valley Road project in Bridgewater and Bedminster.

The I-287 northbound ramp will be closed until 6 a.m. on Monday, May 8. During this time, motorists will be detoured to Exit 26B to I-287 southbound and then take Exit 21A to I-78 eastbound. In addition to the ramp closure, two right lanes on I-78 eastbound will be closed from just before the I-287 interchange to the Bridge over Washington Valley Road starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 5, until 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. This closure is necessary to pour the concrete bridge deck.

By 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, one of the closed lanes on I-78 eastbound will reopen, and by 6 a.m. on Monday, May 8, all lanes will be open with traffic shifted back to its original configuration. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays or plan an alternate route during this time.

The $27.9 million federally funded project aims to replace both eastbound and westbound bridge decks over Route 202/Route 206 and Washington Valley Road, which are currently in poor condition. The project will also update the existing guide rail to meet current standards. The project has been designed in stages to minimize the impact on motorists, with the eastbound bridges being the first phase of construction. Completion of all bridges is expected by the end of 2025.

NJDOT encourages motorists to visit their traffic information website at www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
