Morris County Recognizes Mental Health Advocates During Mental Health Awareness Month

Morristown, NJ - This week, the Board of County Commissioners acknowledged the tireless efforts of local mental health service providers during their work session in observation of Mental Health Awareness Month. Two framed resolutions were presented, acknowledging those who play a pivotal role in the prevention, treatment, and management of mental health issues in Morris County.

"Mental Health Awareness Month is more than just a month on the calendar. It's a call to action for the community to engage in open discussions about mental health," said Commissioner Deputy Director Christine Myers, the liaison to the Morris County Human Services Department. "It's also a time to honor those individuals who provide essential services that allow others to lead full, productive lives."

Among the honored recipients were Amy Archer, Mental Health Administrator and Division Director of Community and Behavioral Health Services, Anna Marie Hess, Administrative Professional for the Office of Community and Behavioral Health Services, and Christopher Chernick, Chair of the Mental Health Addictions Services Advisory Board (MHASAB).

Chernick, a longtime host of a support group for depression and bipolar disorder in Succasunna, expressed his gratitude for the recognition. "The hope and recovery we provide, often in tandem with medical and therapeutic interventions, are invaluable for those struggling with mental health issues. We are thankful for this recognition and your willingness to listen to our experiences and efforts."

The session also celebrated the 60th anniversary of NewBridge Services, a local organization committed to providing counseling, housing, and education to balance the lives of those impacted by mental health issues. CEO Michelle Borden and trustee Betty Cass-Schmidt received a framed resolution from Commissioner Director John Krickus, honoring the organization's long-standing commitment to the community.

"NewBridge Services started as the vision of five individuals and blossomed into a lifeline for many in our community," said Borden. "We offer a range of services, from in-home care to affordable housing, all aimed at helping individuals live independently and comfortably."

Commissioner Director John KrickusĀ praised NewBridge's efforts, noting their work extends beyond mental health support. "From campaigns to curb opioid use among seniors to youth employment programs that teach essential career-building skills, NewBridge's impact on Morris County is immeasurable. We are grateful for your dedication and service."

The Board of County Commissioners also announced plans to recognize Older Americans Month in May, with a formal proclamation set for the May 24th work session.
