MADISON, NJ - The Madison Police Department is opening its doors for a comprehensive examination by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) assessors on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, announced Chief John R. Miscia. This thorough review will encompass the department's policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services.

In an effort to foster transparency and community involvement, the department invites agency employees and community members to contribute their comments during the on-site assessment. Interested parties can call (973) 408-8787 on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, between 10:00 A.M. and 11:00 A.M. Each call will be limited to 5 minutes, focusing on the agency's compliance with NJSACOP standards.

For those wishing to familiarize themselves with these standards, a copy is available at the Madison Police Department. Captain Joseph M. Longo is the local point of contact for this and can be reached at (973) 593-3008 or via email at LongoJ@rosenet.org.

Written comments about the Madison Police Department's ability to meet the accreditation standards are also welcomed. They should be addressed to the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission at 571 Route 73 North, Suite 12, Marlton, N.J. 08053.

The Madison Police Department is aiming to comply with over 100 standards to achieve accredited status.

"Accreditation is a voluntary process that helps to establish a uniform set of best police practices," Chief Miscia explained. "It benefits our department by reducing risk and liability exposure and providing a stronger defense against civil lawsuits."

The Accreditation Program Manager for the NJSACOP, Mr. Harry J Delgado, added, "Accreditation provides objective evidence of an agency’s commitment to excellence in leadership, resource management, and service delivery."

Once granted, accreditation is valid for a three-year period. During this time, the agency must submit annual reports demonstrating its continued compliance with the standards under which it was initially accredited.

The NJSACOP and its New Jersey Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission serve as the legitimate accreditation authorities in the State of New Jersey.
