Wickman to take over following Chief Louie DeRosa III's retirement after four decades of service.
The Mayor and Council of Madison, New Jersey, confirmed the appointment of Kyle Wickman as the Acting Fire Chief for the Madison Fire Department at their recent council meeting on June 13, 2023. Wickman, who boasts 25 years of service, will commence his role on July 15, 2023, following the retirement of Chief Louie DeRosa III, who served Madison for 40 years.
Wickman's journey with the Madison Fire Department is a testament to his commitment and diligence, having risen through the ranks over the years. His service began as a volunteer firefighter and progressed through positions as a probationary firefighter, firefighter, and lieutenant, culminating now in his appointment as Acting Fire Chief.
"Being selected as Acting Fire Chief of the Madison Fire Department is one of my greatest honors," Wickman stated. He went on to express gratitude towards his colleagues and eagerness to maintain the department's forward momentum, highlighting the importance of the collaboration with the Madison Police Department and Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
Chief DeRosa spoke warmly about his retirement and his confidence in Wickman, stating, "Leaving the job that I love is not easy, but handing off the reins to Lieutenant Wickman makes it a little easier."
Mayor Robert H. Conley expressed gratitude towards Chief DeRosa for his service to Madison, recognizing his leadership and initiatives. He also welcomed Wickman, commending his education, experience, skills, and dedication. The mayor expressed anticipation for Wickman's goals for the department, including recruiting and retaining volunteers and ensuring the safety of Madison.
To fill the vacancy left by Chief DeRosa's retirement, Dominic DeRosa was appointed as a probationary firefighter. Early July will witness swearing-in ceremonies for both Acting Chief Wickman and Firefighter DeRosa, and a retirement ceremony for Chief DeRosa.
Originally from Los Angeles, California, Wickman moved to New Jersey in 1992 and graduated from Madison High School in 1994. His fire service career began in 1993 at the New Vernon Volunteer Fire Department before he joined the Madison Fire Department in 1995. Wickman is also a fire instructor at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy and received his Certified Public Manager Certification from Rutgers University Business School.
