NJBAC Welcomes First Executive Director of the Cannabis Training Academy
The academy set to launch in late 2023, aims to aid individuals from underserved communities disproportionately affected by cannabis prohibition in gaining a foothold in the flourishing cannabis industry.
The New Jersey Business Action Center (NJBAC) has made a landmark appointment, naming Tauhid Chappell as the first Executive Director of its upcoming Cannabis Training Academy (CTA).
The Cannabis Training Academy (CTA), set to commence operations in late 2023, aims to assist individuals from communities historically impacted by cannabis prohibition in obtaining an adult-use cannabis operator's license or engaging in related businesses.
Secretary of State Tahesha Way highlighted the importance of this step, stating, "The cannabis industry in New Jersey is flourishing each day. The appointment of the new CTA Executive Director is a significant stride towards the public launch of the CTA. Through accessible education, particularly for those historically affected by cannabis prohibition, we are building a stronger and fairer New Jersey."
The CTA, which was announced in late 2022, will provide cost-free online courses to New Jersey residents aged 21 and above. Participants interested in obtaining an adult-use cannabis license must qualify as social equity, legacy, Impact Zone, diverse-owned, or microbusiness applicants. The academy will offer classes on the application process, legal requirements, and best practices in the cannabis business, taught by industry experts, including interactive live Q&A sessions.
Chappell will be tasked with providing comprehensive educational experiences, expanding the curriculum, managing technical assistance, and creating a vibrant network of cannabis professionals. He brings a wealth of experience from founding the Philadelphia Cannabusiness Association and organizing conferences centered on cannabis business and advocacy, alongside his background in journalism and higher education.
"I'm honored to lead New Jersey’s Cannabis Training Academy, supporting our state's commitment to an equitable cannabis industry," expressed Chappell.
Penni Wild, Deputy Director of NJBAC, lauded the appointment, saying, "Tauhid's extensive expertise and background in the cannabis field, along with his involvement in higher education and media, will undoubtedly enhance the CTA and equip students with the necessary information to thrive."
The CTA represents a step forward in nurturing a fair and robust cannabis industry in New Jersey, one that acknowledges and repairs the damage inflicted on marginalized communities and individuals who faced mass criminalization prior to legalization.
