Pulaski Skyway to Undergo Weekend Closure for Rehabilitation Work
NJDOT Announces Full Closure in Both Directions, Encourages Use of New Jersey Turnpike Extension
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today that the Pulaski Skyway will undergo a complete closure in both directions this weekend for essential maintenance and rehabilitation work. The historic 91-year-old bridge in Jersey City is set to close beginning tonight, Friday, June 23, at 9 p.m., until Sunday, June 25, at 10 a.m.
This scheduled closure is part of the ongoing rehabilitation project of the Pulaski Skyway. It is a proactive measure designed to minimize future lane closures by allowing other maintenance operations and bi-annual inspections to be conducted simultaneously within the closed work zone.
The closure is necessary to permit Skanska Koch, the NJDOT's contractor, to undertake rocker bent work at span 49 over the Broadway Avenue ramp. The process involves jacking the Skyway, an operation that necessitates a complete shutdown. Furthermore, the closure allows for blast cleaning and painting of the overhead bridge truss at span 44 over the railroads.
Most lanes will reopen by 10 a.m. Sunday. However, the right lane on the Skyway northbound will remain closed until 3 p.m., when all northbound lanes are expected to reopen. If the work is completed ahead of schedule, the Skyway could reopen earlier.
To mitigate the effects of the closure, the NJDOT is encouraging motorists to use alternative routes. The NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension is suggested for all destinations, including the Holland Tunnel, I-78, or to I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound. All other motorists will be directed to Route 1&9 Truck in both directions. Detailed detour routes for both northbound and southbound traffic have been provided.
The rehabilitation is part of Contract 8B of the Pulaski Skyway project, a careful coordination effort by the Department with other regional transportation infrastructure projects to minimize traffic congestion.
NJDOT has established a project hotline at 973-776-7400 and email Pulaski.Skyway@dot.nj.gov for anyone who has questions, concerns, or suggestions. It also encourages motorists to check its traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information. However, it emphasizes that the precise timing of the work may change due to weather or other factors.
