Key Promotions and New Appointment Announced by Morris County Prosecutor’s Office
Experienced investigative officers including Jan-Michael Monrad, Mark Castellano, and Joseph Costello elevated to leadership roles, marking an important step in the department's commitment to internal growth and excellence.
MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — The Morris County Prosecutor's Office recently made significant promotions within its investigative team, including the advancement of Jan-Michael Monrad to Deputy Chief of Detectives. This major shift was announced on July 12, 2023, by Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll, First Assistant Prosecutor Maggie Calderwood, and Chief of Detectives Robert McNally.
The formal ceremony acknowledging these promotions took place on July 10, 2023, in the Commissioner’s Public Meeting Room. Promotions spanned several ranks, including Captains, a Lieutenant, Sergeants, and Detective Supervisors. Additionally, a new detective, Nicholas Jung, was sworn in.
Jan-Michael Monrad, with over 28 years in law enforcement and a wide range of investigative experience, was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief of Detectives. Monrad's exceptional career, filled with significant advancements, started with his tenure as a Patrolman/Detective with the Boonton Township Police Department. Known for his expertise in electronic surveillance, Monrad's outstanding service includes involvement in numerous high-profile trials and critical units, earning him widespread recognition.
Meanwhile, Mark Castellano and Joseph Costello, both seasoned law enforcement officers, were promoted to the rank of Captain. Castellano, an FBI Trilogy award recipient with notable martial arts skills, will lead the Courts & Administration Division, while Costello, who started his career with the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, will head the Tactical Division.
James Bruno, another accomplished officer, was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant, set to supervise all units within the Special Operations Division. Furthermore, Jimmy Atoche and Matthew Magnone, both having served as Detective Supervisors, have been promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
John Cassie and Muhammad Thomas, who formerly held the rank of Detective, were promoted to the position of Detective Supervisor. Thomas, a decorated veteran with a history of involvement in high-profile cases, will continue his service with the Major Crimes Unit.
Lastly, Morris County native Nicholas Jung was sworn in as Detective, joining the Intelligence & Homeland Security Unit following his work with the General Investigations Unit. Jung's local upbringing and education, along with his dedication to the Prosecutor's Office, position him as a promising new addition to the investigative team.
Commenting on the series of promotions, Prosecutor Carroll affirmed his dedication to promoting from within, highlighting the team's collective commitment to justice. He said, "I am confident that we have selected the most qualified and appropriate leadership to advance the current needs and objectives of the MCPO."
