Spectacular August Supermoons Illuminate Morristown Sky: One Down, One Rare Blue Supermoon to Go!

Residents witnessed the first Sturgeon Supermoon yesterday, but an even rarer Blue Supermoon awaits at the end of the month, promising a sky-gazing spectacle.

Morristown, NJ – Sky-gazers had a celestial treat on Tuesday, with the first of August's two supermoons, the Sturgeon Supermoon, gracing the heavens. But the opportunity to observe this celestial wonder hasn't passed entirely; the rare Blue Supermoon is set to dazzle the skies on August 30th.

What are Supermoons?

Supermoons occur when the moon is full at its closest point to Earth, appearing up to 8% larger and 16% brighter. This proximity varies between 226,000 and 251,000 miles from Earth, with only the closest three or four approaches each year qualifying as supermoons.

The Sturgeon Supermoon (First Event):

The first event took place on Tuesday, with peak illumination at 2:32 p.m. ET. Those looking toward the southeast after sunset would have seen the phenomenon. The Sturgeon Supermoon, named after the giant sturgeons from the Great Lakes, was also known as the green corn moon, grain moon, among other names. Sturgeons are Jurassic-era fish, some reaching an impressive 20 feet in length.

Blue Supermoon (Second Event):

The second event, the Blue Supermoon, will peak on August 30th at 9:36 p.m. ET, appearing "exceptionally close" at 222,043 miles from Earth. This event is particularly unique as it's almost 17,000 miles closer than average. A blue moon refers to the second full moon in a calendar month or the third of four in an astrological season, making a blue supermoon even rarer. The last occurrence was in December 2009, with the next expected in August 2032.

A Month of Celestial Wonders:

August 2023 stands out for hosting two of the year's four supermoons. The end-of-August blue supermoon is anticipated to be the largest and brightest, offering locals another chance to witness this breathtaking spectacle.

Residents of Morristown and Morris County are encouraged to mark their calendars for the Blue Supermoon's peak on August 30th. This rare celestial event provides an educational and awe-inspiring experience for families and astronomy enthusiasts alike. Don't miss the chance to witness the beauty of our universe right from your backyard!
