Pulaski Skyway to Shut Down Completely This Weekend for Rocker Bent Work and Inspections

NJDOT announces 25-hour closure from Friday evening to Saturday night for essential maintenance and inspections, urging drivers to consider alternative routes.

In a move that could significantly impact local travel, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced a full 25-hour closure of the Pulaski Skyway this weekend. The shutdown, scheduled from 9 p.m. tonight, October 13, to 10 p.m. tomorrow, October 14, will affect both northbound and southbound lanes.

Who: The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and its contractor, Skanska Koch, are spearheading the project.

What: The full closure is designed to allow critical "rocker bent" work at span 51 near the Broadway Avenue ramp in Jersey City. This closure also facilitates other maintenance operations and bi-annual inspections.

When: The shutdown will commence tonight, Friday, October 13, at 9 p.m. and is expected to last until 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 14. If the work is completed ahead of schedule, the Skyway could reopen sooner.

Where: The closure will affect both directions of the Pulaski Skyway, beginning past Newark Liberty International Airport for northbound traffic and on Route 139 lower roadway for southbound traffic.

Why: The primary reason for the shutdown is to advance the rehabilitation of the 91-year-old bridge and to allow bi-annual inspections. This is part of the larger Contract 8B of the Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project.

How: During the closure, detours will be in place. NJDOT advises drivers to use the New Jersey Turnpike-Hudson County Extension for all destinations, including the Holland Tunnel, I-78, or I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound.

Detour Information
  • Northbound Detour: Traffic will follow Route 1&9 Truck northbound to the intersection of Route 7, Route 139, and Route 1&9 in Jersey City.
  • Southbound Detour: Traffic coming from Route 139 will be directed to the off-ramp to I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound.
  • Local Traffic for Jersey City: Stay in the middle lane to take Route 139 Upper Roadway, following signs to Kennedy Boulevard/Jersey City.
  • Kearny Ramp Detour: Those wanting to take the northbound Pulaski Skyway from Kearny will be directed through a series of local streets, ultimately leading them onto Route 1&9 Truck northbound.
