Newark Light Rail Suspends Service for I-280 Bridge Project
Temporary closure facilitates essential infrastructure work on I-280 in Newark, Essex County.
NEWARK, NJ – Residents and daily commuters who rely on the NJ TRANSIT Newark Light Rail should be aware of a temporary closure between Grove Street and Newark Penn Station this weekend. The suspension is integral for the installation of shielding under the I-280 highway, specifically above the Orange Street Light Rail Station.
What's Happening and When?
The need for the shutdown arises from the broader I-280 bridge deck replacement initiative. NJDOT's contractor, Sanzari, Inc., has slated work sessions on the Light Rail tracks at the Orange Street Light Rail Station for Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5, both from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The primary task? Installing essential shielding beneath the westbound lane of I-280.
For travelers, it's important to note that while the Light Rail service is paused, both I-280 and Orange Street will remain open for vehicular traffic.
The Broader Project:
This venture is more than just a weekend's work.
The $31.7 million federal undertaking is set to revamp the I-280 westbound bridge decks that hover over key points in Newark - the NJ TRANSIT tracks, Orange Street, and 1st Street.
The project encompasses a range of essential works, from substructure repairs and bearing replacements to structural steel refurbishments and select bridge repainting. Additionally, upgrades include a new retaining wall on the 1st Street ramp leading to the I-280 westbound.
This change will facilitate three through lanes past the bridge on I-280 westbound. Motorists can also anticipate two new overhead sign structures to be erected over the highway. With all these enhancements, the completion goal is set for fall 2025.
Staying Informed:
As the project progresses, Variable Message Signs will keep motorists informed about any impending traffic pattern alterations. However, as with any outdoor work, there's a caveat: timelines might shift due to unforeseen weather conditions or other external factors.
NJDOT urges all motorists to stay updated by checking real-time travel data on their official traffic information portal, www.511nj.org. For those directly affected by the Light Rail closure, alternate bus services will be available. Further details on this substitute service can be found in NJ TRANSIT’s latest advisory.
