2023 Morris County Seniors and Persons with Disabilities Art Show

Morristown, NJ - The 2023 Morris County Seniors and Persons with Disabilities Art Show, held at the Marion E. Sally Building, heralded the creative spirit of senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. The event, organized by the Morris County Office of Aging, Disabilities and Community Programming in collaboration with Norwescap, marked its 16th anniversary and its first in-person return post-pandemic.

The show attracted 21 artworks spanning five categories, with each category yielding three top-place winners who were awarded satin ribbons and art supply gift bundles. Moreover, every participant received a certificate of recognition, celebrating their creative contribution.

Morris County Commissioner Deb Smith highlighted the synergy between the art show and the County Commissioners' recent Arts & Humanities Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrations, recognizing local organizations with framed proclamations. The art show extends this recognition to the senior and special needs artists who enrich the community.

A distinguished panel, including Norwescap's Dr. Edward Ramirez, Rochelle Ostenfeld, and Gallery X's Xavier Powell, adjudicated the submissions. Norwescap CEO Mark Valli acknowledged the "untapped talent" present within Morris County, stressing that art is a unifying and expressive force. Valli outlined Norwescap's commitment to community services, which complement the artistic celebration by supporting individuals across various programs.

In his poignant remarks, Valli stated, “We're all born artists... Art is a way to bring us together,” championing the idea that art can foster community bonds.

Winners in categories such as Acrylic Painting, Photography, Mixed Media, Watercolor, and Drawing were announced, celebrating the works of artists like Ismael Villavvubla for his "Campout," Tom Cassidy’s "Sole Pole with Clouds," and Dee DeJulio's "Best Buddies," among others.

The event concluded with a luncheon courtesy of The Fruited Plain caterers, reinforcing the day's communal atmosphere. The County Commissioners support this annual artistic venture through a grant in aid of approximately $5,000, showcasing their commitment to local cultural initiatives.

Morris County extends heartfelt congratulations to all participants and expresses gratitude towards Norwescap's team for their indispensable role in orchestrating the event, thus ensuring the continued celebration of the arts within the community.
