NJ TRANSIT Introduces Revolutionary NaviLens Tech for Enhanced Bus Stop Accessibility

New Brunswick becomes the test ground for NaviLens, promising digital convenience and inclusivity for NJ TRANSIT bus riders.

New Brunswick, NJ – NJ TRANSIT has embarked on a forward-thinking journey to revolutionize passenger experience with the introduction of the NaviLens technology pilot program, aiming to upgrade travel convenience and accessibility. The NaviLens system employs novel QR-style codes, readable from a distance and designed to deliver real-time bus service data directly to commuters' smartphones, complete with vital enhancements for visually impaired patrons.

The pioneering technology not only informs riders of upcoming bus departures but also guides visually impaired customers through directional audio and wayfinding assistance. The color-coded codes are detectable from up to 60 feet away, a significant leap over conventional QR codes, eliminating the need for exact signage location awareness at bus stops.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, New Jersey's Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair, heralded the technology as a "game changer," emphasizing its capacity to blend service details with support for diverse languages and visual needs, thereby enriching travel for all commuters.

Kevin S. Corbett, NJ TRANSIT President & CEO, and Shanti Narra, NJ TRANSIT Board Member and Middlesex County Commissioner, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the initiative's alignment with NJ TRANSIT's dedication to accessibility and its potential benefits for thousands of public transport dependents.

The NaviLens service transcends mere arrival times, offering augmented reality navigation and multilingual support across 34 languages, ensuring a tailored experience for each user. This innovative service is currently being trialed on 51 bus stops in New Brunswick, and its success may lead to broader system implementation and integration with NJ TRANSIT's mobile application.
