Morris County Nears Major Eco-Preservation Effort with $5 Million Drew Forest Grant
Morris County Open Space Trust Fund Committee urges the Commissioners to endorse a multi-million-dollar grant for Drew Forest conservation.
Morris County's commitment to environmental conservation took a step forward as the Open Space Trust Fund Committee recommended a $5 million grant to Madison Borough for the acquisition and preservation of the 51-acre Drew Forest.
In a sole application that underscores the region's conservation priorities, the Committee's proposal marks the first of its kind to be deliberated by the Morris County Board of Commissioners this year. With a formal decision pending later in the year, the announcement has generated considerable anticipation among the local community.
Commissioner Director John Krickus expressed gratitude for the Committee's diligence, “The Open Space Trust Fund Committee has recommended a considerable amount of funding in response to Madison’s application. This is the first time the Committee has presented its recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners. We thank them for their work,” Krickus remarked, highlighting the importance of the recommendation.
The Open Space Trust Fund, financed by a voter-backed county tax, is no stranger to large-scale preservation efforts. It has been instrumental in conserving over 17,800 acres since 1994, an area surpassing Parsippany Troy-Hills Township in size, through funds exceeding a quarter-billion dollars.
Jay Thomson, the Committee Chair, outlined the comprehensive review process undertaken, "The committee carefully considered all aspects of Madison’s application, including public comments, site inspections, and the status of ongoing negotiations," Thomson detailed.
The proposed grant, if approved, would serve as a pivotal investment in Madison's endeavor to secure Drew Forest from Drew University, ensuring the protection of this ecological jewel for future generations.
