Route 22 Eastbound Faces Weekend Closure Amid Bridge Project in Union Township
Union Township prepares for traffic shifts with the upcoming installation of steel girders as part of a major infrastructure enhancement.
Beginning Friday night, Route 22 Eastbound in Union Township will undergo a lane closure to facilitate the final stage of precast pavement panel installation, part of a $40.8 million bridge replacement initiative set to enhance local infrastructure.
Union Township, NJ – Commuters on Route 22 Eastbound are advised to anticipate delays or seek alternative routes this weekend, from November 10 to 12, due to scheduled lane closures for bridge replacement works. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced that traffic will be limited to one lane between the Chestnut Street overpass and the Garden State Parkway's northbound exit. Despite the constriction, access to the Parkway will remain unaffected.
This closure marks the culmination of three weekends dedicated to installing nearly 200 precast panels, a vital step in the bridge project aimed at improving travel conditions. NJDOT urges drivers to exercise caution when passing through the construction zone.
The following week introduces additional overnight disruptions, with lane closures on both Route 22 and Route 82/Morris Avenue slated for steel girder placement. These activities will commence on November 13 and continue through November 17, affecting the stretch between Burke Parkway and the vicinity of major retailers Lowe’s and Burlington Coat Factory.
The extensive project, fueled by state funding, addresses the deteriorating bridges over Route 82 and includes a suite of upgrades from roadway widening for auxiliary lanes to the implementation of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). Enhanced sidewalks, utility systems, signage, and stormwater management are also integral to the project, which is expected to reach completion in the summer of 2024.
NJDOT reminds the public that the timing of these activities is weather-dependent and subject to alteration. Travelers can stay informed on the latest traffic conditions and construction updates by visiting the NJDOT traffic information website.
