Governor Murphy Launches Initiative to Transform Brownfields into Solar Energy Sites

New website to streamline solar project development on unused land; legislation boosts incentives for clean energy and historic preservation

NEW JERSEY – Governor Phil Murphy today announced the launch of a new website designed to guide municipalities and solar developers through the process of transforming landfills into solar energy facilities. The Landfill to Solar website will serve as a comprehensive resource hub, offering step-by-step guidance and access to state incentives aimed at promoting clean energy projects.

In addition, Governor Murphy signed legislation, A4619/S3479, enhancing the Brownfields Redevelopment Incentive Program and the Historic Property Reinvestment Act. These updates will provide significant financial incentives for redeveloping brownfields into solar energy sites and supporting historic preservation across New Jersey. The newly enacted measures are part of the Murphy Administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and achieve 100% clean electricity by 2035.

The new website, developed by the Governor’s Office of Climate Action and the Green Economy, consolidates resources from the Board of Public Utilities (BPU), Economic Development Authority (EDA), and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to streamline the development of solar projects on landfills. The platform also includes a Solar Siting Analysis Mapping Tool and instructions on applying for various incentive programs.

Governor Murphy’s initiatives continue to position New Jersey as a national leader in clean energy, job creation, and sustainability. The state is projected to exceed 7,400 MW of installed solar capacity by 2026, driving further growth in the energy sector.
