Madison Environmental Commission to Host Native Plant Sale, Elevating Local Eco-conscious Home & Garden Tour

Alongside the Friends of the Madison Library Home & Garden Tour on September 10, the plant sale offers native flora and free eco-friendly consultations to the public.

Madison, NJ - The Madison Environmental Commission (MEC) is partnering with Toadshade Wildflower Farm to host a native plant sale on Sunday, September 10. This sale is a supplemental event to the Friends of the Madison Library Home & Garden Tour and aims to make native plants more accessible to local residents.

Who: The Madison Environmental Commission (MEC) in partnership with Toadshade Wildflower Farm.
What: A native plant sale and mini-eco fair, featuring expert consultations.
When: Sunday, September 10, from 12-4 p.m.
Where: 12 Fairwood Rd, Madison, NJ, the residence of Claire Whitcomb, chair of the MEC.
Why: To make native plants readily available and to provide expert advice on sustainable living.

According to Claire Whitcomb, chair of the MEC, “Native plants are hard to find at local nurseries. We’re thrilled that Toadshade Wildflower Farm is bringing its unique selection of seed-grown native plants to Madison, along with expert advice.”

Plants will be available for on-site purchase or can be pre-ordered for pick-up on the day of the event.

The plant sale is set to function as a mini-eco fair, with professionals available to discuss solar power, energy-efficient renovations, and organic lawn care. The event is free and open to the public.

Rachel Ehrlich, Borough Council liaison to the MEC, praises the partnership between the Friends of the Madison Public Library and MEC: “The tour is an excellent opportunity to see beautiful homes–and different ways you can make your home healthier for both your family and the environment.”

Ehrlich’s energy-efficient home will also be part of the tour, showcasing native plantings by local landscape architect Carolle Huber.

Landscape architect Tom Salaki, who is based in Madison and has three garden projects featured on the tour, adds that “native plants can also be used in a formal way.” He recommends beginning with “a strict geometric grid of native grasses and then infilling with flowering perennials chosen for a succession of blooms and visual interest throughout the seasons.

Tickets for the Friends of the Madison Public Library tour can be purchased for $50 at www.friendsmadisonnjlibrary.org.
