DCA Secures an Additional $1.19 Million for Section 8 Housing in New Jersey
The new funds will expedite assistance for approximately 92 households on the Section 8 waiting list, further bolstering New Jersey's efforts to provide affordable housing.
Morristown, NJ - The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) has been granted an additional $1.19 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to extend its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program. This comes on the heels of a record-breaking $291.6 million in annual HCV funding received earlier in 2023.
DCA serves as a vital conduit for low-income families seeking affordable housing in New Jersey. This new grant will enable the agency to assist approximately 92 additional households from its Section 8 waiting list.
Acting Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez said, “More funding means DCA will be able to serve people on the Section 8 waiting list much more quickly. This can be life-changing for families who haven’t had the benefit of a stable, safe, and sanitary home because they can’t afford rent.”
The funds are immediately available and will be utilized across the state to help residents in need. Households that benefit from these funds will be selected from DCA's current Section 8 waiting list.
The Section 8 HCV program helps low-income families by providing direct rent subsidy payments to landlords. A housing subsidy is directly paid to the landlord by the DCA, and the family covers the remaining rent. Before qualifying, all rental units must meet HUD's minimum standards for health and safety.
DCA has maintained its status as a Section 8 High Performer for five consecutive years, as designated by HUD. This additional funding is a testament to DCA’s effective administration and continuous efforts to assist families in attaining affordable housing.
