Madison, NJ – Early morning on October 5, 2023, Madison Police officers responded promptly to an alarm triggered at Gerlach’s Jewelers, located at 61 Main Street. The rapid response time of under two minutes led officers to the scene where they discovered visible signs of forced entry: a rear door pried open and a window screen detached. Inside, a scene of disarray awaited, with the perpetrator, Jerome B. Howard of Lawrenceville, NJ, caught in the act. His attempted escape was thwarted, leading to his apprehension and subsequent medical evaluation at Morristown Medical Center.
Officers present during this critical response were Sgt. Jim Cavezza, Cpl. Nelson Jimenez, Ptl. Jon Finocchiaro, and Ptl. Renato Capillas. A notable consequence of the arrest was an injury sustained by a Madison officer, who, after being treated, has been discharged from Morristown Medical Center. Reinforcements from Chatham Township Police, Florham Park, and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office provided additional support during the incident.
The Madison Police Department’s Investigative Division is now spearheading the ongoing inquiry. Current charges being formulated against Mr. Howard encompass Burglary, Theft, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Mischief, and Aggravated Assault. Interestingly, Howard is also under scrutiny for a presumed burglary at a jewelry establishment in Chatham, NJ, occurring earlier that same day.
Chief Miscia extolled the officers for their decisive and rapid action, emphasizing their dedication to protecting local businesses from such crimes. He stated, “This is an example of police work at its finest."
Furthermore, Madison's Mayor, Robert H. Conley, expressed his hope for the injured officer's speedy recovery and gratitude towards the first responders.
It's pivotal to note that Jerome B. Howard, the defendant, retains the presumption of innocence until proven guilty as dictated by the legal system.
