New Travel Authorization Requirement for Europe Bound U.S. Citizens in 2024
Starting next year, Americans will need an electronic travel authorization to visit 30 European countries; UK to follow suit with its own rules.
Morristown, NJ — If you're planning a European getaway in 2024, make room for some extra paperwork. Effective next year, U.S. citizens will need an electronic travel authorization in addition to their passports to enter 30 European countries, including popular destinations like France, Italy, and Germany.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is the organization behind this new requirement.
According to the European Commission, the system aims "to manage and prevent migration crime and terrorism."
Those who have been traveling visa-free will now have to secure an approved ETIAS form for entry.
The Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How
Who: U.S. citizens planning short-term visits to 30 European countries.
What: A new electronic travel authorization form is required in addition to a passport.
When: Effective starting in 2024.
Where: The requirement applies to 30 European countries, excluding the United Kingdom, which will introduce its own electronic authorization.
Why: To manage and mitigate risks related to migration crime and terrorism, according to European authorities.
How: Application details for the ETIAS authorization will be made available online. The cost of the application is seven euros. However, travelers below 18 or above 70 are exempt from the fee.
More Details
The ETIAS is not a formal visa but serves as a mandatory travel authorization form. It must be kept handy both physically and digitally while traveling, as per AAA.
"I wouldn't let this deter you from planning anything," said AAA Travel Agent Cacki Jones. "It's just another step you have to do. And, again, hopefully, it won't be time-consuming since it's electronic, and it's not difficult."
Jones anticipates that the approval process will offer a "pretty quick turnaround."
Payment for the ETIAS application can be made via debit or credit card. The United Kingdom is not among the countries requiring the ETIAS but will introduce a separate electronic authorization that will cost American travelers approximately $12.

Details about the specific timeline for the ETIAS requirement have not been released yet. The State Department advises travelers to stay updated as their travel dates approach.
Additionally, travelers need to have a valid passport, which usually takes between 10 to 13 weeks to arrive by mail, to apply for ETIAS or any other electronic authorization.
