Major Lane Closures on I-78 Eastbound This Saturday in Somerset
Bridge Deck Overhaul Continues – Motorists Warned of Significant Delays and Urged to Seek Alternative Paths
The ongoing bridge deck replacement project on I-78 will result in the closure of two eastbound lanes this Saturday, November 11, in Somerset County, potentially causing major traffic delays.
Motorists traversing I-78 eastbound in Somerset County are advised to prepare for substantial disruptions on November 11, as critical deck replacement work necessitates lane closures. The construction, part of a $27.9 million federal initiative, will close the two left lanes from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., leaving only one lane operational before the I-78/I-287 interchange split.
Traffic will be directed to the right, with the left lanes over the median's temporary bridge shut for repairs. The northbound I-287 ramp will feed directly into the remaining open lane of I-78 eastbound, while the southbound I-287 ramp will implement a temporary stop before merging.
The project, aimed at replacing deteriorated bridge decks over Routes 202/206 and Washington Valley Road, also includes upgrading guiderails and resurfacing roadways. Efforts to minimize motorist inconvenience have shaped the staged progression of the project, which began on the weekend of October 20 and is slated for completion in fall 2025.
Officials urge drivers to anticipate heavy traffic and consider using alternative routes during the affected hours. Post-construction, the two left lanes will reopen for vehicular traffic, with trucks being advised to use the right lanes. The temporary stop sign at the I-287 southbound ramp will be reverted to a yield sign by the end of the day.
Residents and commuters are reminded to stay informed on traffic updates and plan their travels accordingly to avoid the expected congestion and delays.
