Friday, March 1 at 6:49 a.m., Madison Police were dispatched to a Lincoln Place business on the report of a suspicious vehicle. The caller reported a white van with no front plate was parked near the dumpster possibly stealing cooking oil. Madison patrol officers arrived and located the vehicle in the parking lot of an adjacent Main Street business. An investigation revealed the driver, later identified as Cassel Smith, 44 of Staten Island, NY, was illegally taking possession of several businesses cooking oil. Further, the vehicle Smith was operating had a fictitious rear license plate on it. After a roadside investigation, Smith was placed under arrest and transported to the Madison Police Department. At headquarters, Smith was charged with theft, a disorderly person’s offense, along with several motor vehicle infractions. Smith was later released on his own recognizance pending a mandatory court appearance in Madison Joint Municipal Court.
A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, this Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
