NJDOC-Produced Short Documentary Showcases a Unique Music Education Program for Incarcerated Men

NEW JERSEY – The New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) is proud to announce its short documentary, "Be Not Afraid," spotlighting a pioneering music education program for incarcerated men at the Garden State Correctional Facility, has garnered the Broader Vision Award at the 22nd Annual Garden State Film Festival.

Showcasing 200 films from 14 countries across eight venues, the globally-recognized Garden State Film Festival celebrates independent film by curating a selection of original works by filmmakers locally and from around the world.

This prestigious recognition highlights films contributing significantly to the public good, a testament to the documentary's impactful narrative and the innovative educational initiative it showcases.

Produced by the NJDOC's Office of Public Information and the Division of Programs and Reintegration Services, "Be Not Afraid" delves into the transformative journey of participants in an immersive music theory educational program. Now in its 26th year, the program has been instrumental in changing the lives of its student musicians, offering lessons in teamwork, self-expression, responsibility, and creativity, alongside the art and theory of music.

Commissioner Victoria L. Kuhn, Esq., expressed her pride in the educational staff and the recognition of their hard work. She emphasized the documentary's role in showcasing the life-changing opportunities provided to incarcerated individuals, stating, "The film captures the transformative impact of rehabilitative programs that make a significant difference in the lives of incarcerated persons."

The documentary also explores the personal journey of Ben, a former lead singer of the inmate band, as he navigates the emotional challenges of reintegration and leaving behind the bonds formed within the program. "Be Not Afraid" offers audiences a profound look at the themes of growth, apprehension, and the lasting impact of music education on the lives of those involved.

Dr. Darcella Sessomes, NJDOC’s Chief of Programs and Reintegration Services, highlighted the documentary's effectiveness in portraying the program's profound effects on both students and educators.

The documentary effectively portrays the journey of these young men and the extraordinary teachers and staff who help them achieve not just musical proficiency but a sense of achievement and belonging, and gives them training for a career in the music industry,” said Dr. Darcella Sessomes, NJDOC’s Chief of Programs and Reintegration Services.

Filmmaker Chris Carden, Deputy Director of Public Information for the NJDOC and the driving force behind the documentary, shared his hopes that "Be Not Afraid" would challenge public perceptions and foster a greater understanding of the efforts toward self-improvement made by incarcerated individuals.

As "Be Not Afraid" receives international attention through its premiere at the Garden State Film Festival—a platform celebrating independent films from around the world—it stands as a compelling testament to the power of education and the arts within the correctional system.
