Youth Wrestling Coach Sentenced for Child Pornography Distribution

Alec Donovan receives an 87-month prison term for distributing explicit material and soliciting minors.

TRENTON, NJ – In a sobering reminder of the vigilance required in protecting the most vulnerable in our communities, Alec Donovan, a 26-year-old man from Brick, New Jersey, has been sentenced to 87 months in prison for his involvement in the distribution of child pornography. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger made the announcement today following the sentencing, which took place in Trenton federal court under U.S. District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi.

Donovan, who was actively involved in youth sports as a wrestling coach and referee, had previously admitted to the charges against him, pleading guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography. The court learned that from January to March 2021, Donovan had utilized an internet-based application to not only share images and videos of child sexual abuse, including content involving pre-pubescent children but also to engage inappropriately with minors. This engagement included soliciting nude photographs from minors and distributing nude photographs to them.

In delivering the sentence, Judge Quraishi also mandated a substantial period of supervised release, extending to 30 years following Donovan's prison term. This decision underscores the gravity of Donovan's actions and the ongoing commitment to monitoring and preventing further harm to the community.

The successful resolution of this case is attributed to the diligent efforts of the Newark Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task force, led by FBI Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy. The task force's investigation was instrumental in bringing Donovan's activities to light and ensuring justice for the victims involved.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle L. Goldman of the General Crimes Unit in Newark represented the government, reflecting the serious approach taken by federal authorities in prosecuting cases involving the exploitation of children. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children from predators, particularly in environments where they should expect trust and protection.
